The Tools of the Trade

Making the best pizza at home is as easy as one, two, three when you have the right equipment for the job.  Here is a list of the essential equipment to create a restaurant style pizza in your own home.

Pizza Stone

Referred to simply as a "stone" these are actually made from ceramic or clay.  They absorb moisture and heat extremely well and at home they mimic the base of a wood or coal fired pizza oven.  They help your pizza cook fast and are a must for dark golden brown, crispy crusts.  When making your best at home pizza place your pizza stone in the oven and pre-heat it to 500 degrees.

Rolling Pin

While a traditional rolling pin isn't required to stretch and shape dough it can make it easier for beginners.  When rolling out dough always remember a few quick tips: start by lightly flowering your working surface,  when rolling always begin at the center and work your way outward, don't panic if the dough tears just pinch it back together, if the dough doesn't feel like it's stretching or shrinks back as you work it just walk away for a few minutes and the dough will become more relaxed.

Pizza Peel

This thin, long handled paddle makes it very easy to slide your pizza onto a very hot pizza stone quickly.  Once your dough is rolled out to the perfect shape and size sprinkle your pizza peel with corn meal/corn grits and place dough on top.  Before you start topping your pizza make sure the dough moves easily without sticking.  Once your pizza is topped slide it onto the pre-heated pizza stone and bake for 7-9 minutes.
